In 2nd grade we have homework each night Monday - Thursday. We expect that the homework will take approximately 30 minutes to complete. Please let me know if the homework takes too much time once you get into a routine with the new homework in 2nd grade.
Below are a few important notes and explanations about our homework routine.
1. Until beginning of year assessments are completed you will not have a specific guided reading book to take home each week. Instead, you may read a book of your choice from home, a library book, or ask me for a book from our classroom library to take home. This book should still be around your reading level.
**Students will eventually be asked to complete a short written response about the book they read at least 2 nights a week. We will start this after the first couple of months of school.
2. Each week you will have a math homework sheet. This sheet is split into 4 different sections. You only have to do one section per night Monday - Thursday and then turn it in on Friday. If you don't do them in the order that is on the newsletter it's no big deal! As long as you have completed them all by Friday it doesn't matter what order you do them in.
4. We will write our homework in our planner each morning. If there are any changes to homework, or homework is cancelled for a night or doubled up one night we will have a note about it in our planner.
5. Try to practice math facts at least 2 nights out of the week. Although it is not part of our nightly homework, it is still a standard for 2nd graders to be fluent in math facts 0-20 by the end of the year! (45 problems in 3 minutes)
Homework every night M-Th:
1 section of your weekly math homework sheet
Read 15-20 minutes and complete a written response at least 2 nights each week.
Additional practice that you can do occasionally throughout the week (or every night if you have time)
Practice your math facts!!!!!! Try to be able to answer a math problem in 1 second or less!!
Read for fun!
